Early Life and Education
Tarique Rahman was born in Dhaka (formerly Dacca, East Pakistan) to a family that would determine the political future of an emerging nation.
- He is the son of Ziaur Rahman, the hero of the Liberation War 1971 and the 7th President of Bangladesh, and Begum Khaleda Zia, who has served three terms as Prime Minister.
- He attended BAF Shaheen College, in Dhaka, a prestigious school that mostly served children of military personnel.
- He entered the University of Dhaka in the mid-1980s, first taking classes in law and later transferring to the Department of International Relations. His years at the university coincided with significant political unrest during the anti-autocracy movement against Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
He did not graduate; instead, he chose the business world (textile and agricultural products); however, the exposure he had to political philosophies and the ‘Zia’ legacy would eventually impact his life.

Rise to Power: The “Hawa Bhaban” Era (2001–2006)
Tarique Rahman’s official foray into politics began in the late 1980s, but he achieved prominent stature as the son of the then Prime Minister, Khalida Zia, during her second term (2001-2006).
- Senior Deputy General Secretary: Tarique was appointed to this key party position in the party in 2002, which initiated a “grassroots coordination” tour that helped him to assert firm control over the regional chapters of the party.
- Shadow Government: During his time in power, Tarique commanded his office in Gulshan (known as “Hawa Bhaban”). Critics and political opponents, particularly from the Awami League, accused Hawa Bhaban of serving as a parallel power center
- Allegations of Corruption: Detractors frequently branded him with the moniker ‘Mr. Ten Percent,’ a label born from widespread accusations that he pocketed illegal kickbacks on major state projects.
One example was the “Khamba” (Electric Pole) scandal, where he profited from the installation of thousands of empty electric poles in rural areas. While the BNP has dismissed these allegations as politically motivated attacks, a Discord message from a U.S. embassy assess in 2008 (published in a leaked WikiLeaks report) described Tarique as a personification of the “kleptocratic government.”

Arrest, Torture, and 17 Years of Exile (2007–2025)
Tarique has had many issues regarding his residency in Bangladesh while at the same time having further removed himself from Bangladesh by voluntarily choosing to live in a foreign country and receiving support for his desire to leave.
In March of 2007, he was arrested for multiple counts of corruption and, following his arrest, was tortured while in prison and had his back broken. This was part of a pattern of torture that included multiple assaults on Tarique. After the first 18 months of his 2-year prison sentence, he was afforded medical treatment and left for England.
During the 17 years that he has lived in London, he has not been able to return to Bangladesh. This means that he will have lived in England for almost his entire adult life (from 38 to 55 years old).
Since the early 2000s, the government has convicted Tarique in several cases, all of which have been linked to political bias against him through various forms of violence. The following are examples of Tarique’s convictions and their nature:
- 21 August Grenade Attack: Tarique was found guilty of organizing the attack on the Hasina rally in 2004 and received a life sentence.
- Money Laundering: He was found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
- Zia Orphanage Trust Case: In this instance, he was convicted both for being a member of the Zia orphanage trust and for being his mother’s son and received a 10-year prison sentence.
Throughout all of these cases, Tarique has maintained that they are motivated by political reasons to keep him out of the country, that the charges are unfounded, and that they are being used as a means to persecute him.

The “Remote Control” Leadership
While separated by 5,000 miles, Tarique Rahman acted as the de facto leader of the BNP party. He assumed the title of Acting Chairman after the incarceration of Khaleda Zia in 2018. Rahman brought BNP into the modern world when he utilized video conferencing to connect with grassroots leaders regularly.
He was ultimately responsible for securing the BNP’s boycott of the “Sham” elections held in 2014, 2018, and 2024 via “remote control” leadership. In doing so, he was able to maintain the BNP’s enormous supporter base over the course of the first ten years of extensive government crackdowns.
Return and the 2026 Election Victory
The fall of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 opened the door for new leadership to emerge. An interim administration, led by the Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, facilitated the clearance of any and all legal roadblocks that had prevented Mr. Rahman from returning home.
- On December 25, 2025, Rahman returned to Dhaka. From the moment he stepped off the plane until arriving in Gulshan, he was welcomed by millions of enthusiastic supporters—a welcome like nothing seen in Bangladesh’s history.
- On February 12, 2026, the BNP won a historic victory in the general elections held that day, securing 212 out of 299 available parliamentary seats. Tarique won comfortably from two different constituencies in the election (Bogra-6 and Dhaka-17).
- On January 9, 2026, just before the election, Tarique was officially appointed Chairman of the BNP, succeeding his late mother, who had passed away prior to his homecoming.
Personal Life and Family
Yasmeen Rahman was born in 1990 into a middle-class family in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As the daughter of Tarique and Zubaida Rahman and granddaughter of the former president of Bangladesh, she fits perfectly into Bangladeshi culture.
- He studied at Asian University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2013.
- He is a member of the BNP and was active in the party’s youth organization.
- As the future heir apparent to Tarique Rahman, he will likely inherit his father’s political ambitions and become involved in Bangladeshi politics.

Vision for the Future (The “July Charter”)
Tarique, nominated as Prime Minister, is attempting to shake his “brash” persona from the early 2000s to assume a more statesmanlike status. His manifesto for 2026 is derived from the “July Charter” and contains the following items:
- Constitutional Reform: A commitment to instituting a limit of two terms for prime ministers to avert future autocracy.
- Economic Diversification: To develop sectors beyond the garment industry with an emphasis on ICT and regional-based e-commerce sites.
- Social Safety: Using the “Family Card” system to ensure essential goods are made available to low-income homes.
Foreign Policy: Implement a “Bangladesh First” policy that encourages mutual respect with India while building close ties with China and the West.
Conclusion: The Architect of a New Era?
Among the history of present-day Bangladesh, no political figure has undergone a more climactic arc than Tarique Rahman. Tarique originally operated in the capacity of a “shadow power” in the early 2000s before experiencing 17 years of harsh exile and finally achieving a historical return as the Prime Minister-designate of Bangladesh in 2026.
The outcome of the February 2026 election not only validates an individual but also represents a complete shift in the sense of self-identity for the citizens of Bangladesh. His support base believes that he resembles the “Prodigal Son” now that he has reinvented the BNP from abroad and thereby proved his fortitude to keep the grassroots voice of the BNP alive through 20 years of oppression. However, Tarique continues to face scrutiny from many and his ultimate success as the next Prime Minister will serve as the measure of his success in replacing the “brash” style of politics of his youth with the “statesmanlike” restraint he promised while at the London Conference.
